The Vogue Years 1962–1970: A Tribute to the Style of Françoise Hardy

Near Mint Haarlem presents an exhibition dedicated to the style of French music and fashion icon Françoise Hardy during her hugely influential years at the Vogue label (1962–1970).

The exhibition includes selections from the largest Dutch collection of 7" Vogue EPs, alongside exclusive Hardy-inspired work by Grace Spiegel and puppets by Peter van Hout.

Singer-songwriter, actress and international fashion muse Françoise Hardy (1944–2024) broke through in 1962 with Tous les Garçons et les Filles, bringing a cool, introspective melancholy to the otherwise exuberant yé-yé scene she helped create.

Unlike many yé-yé stars, Hardy wrote most of her own material and developed a sophisticated, understated sound influenced by chanson, folk and Anglo-American pop. She also recorded in English, Italian and German, becoming one of the few French pop stars of the era with genuine international appeal.

Visually, she was just as influential. Hardy’s distinct look and minimalist style made her a favourite of photographers and designers including André Courrèges, Paco Rabanne and Yves Saint Laurent. By the mid-to-late sixties, she embodied a distinctly Parisian kind of modernity: elegant, cerebral, slightly aloof and effortlessly cool.

Grace Spiegel is a Netherlands-based international artist whose work is instantly recognisable through its subtle use of colour and minimalist style, often inspired by women and touching on themes of beauty, vulnerability and confidence.
