The rise of the Dutch cassette culture, and the status quo, with involvement from then and publishers of now.
In the 1980s, the cassette scene was vibrant in the Netherlands, partly due to the radio program 'Radiola Improvisatie Salon' and the cassette section 'Dolby' in the magazine Vinyl. The cassette is making a comeback in this era. At this event, representatives from the 1980s sit alongside people releasing cassettes in 2025.
Come to PHIL on Sunday afternoon for a discussion led by Oscar Smit, editor of the Dolby section in the magazine Vinyl, with participants from the 1980s and current cassette publishers. Featuring stories from that time, including Frans de Waard, musician, label owner, and compiler of the Dutch Cassette Catalog. Or Brian Dommisse from the label Trumpett Tapes who will share how they once released a cassette in a milk carton.
And what about cassettes now? Discussion with current cassette publishers such as the Haarlem label Geertruida, which releases many cassettes. Or Hans Bos from the Amsterdam label Carcassettes, actively working to digitally map their history and set to release their 40th edition next year.
