Retro Rewind

A flashback to the late 80’s alternative dj culture at CLUB DWIEZELS (De HAK) Haarlem.

The 1980s were characterized by a sense of doom. Haarlemmer Ro Krom (1969) grew up with the idea that 'the bomb' could actually drop, which had a major influence on the music he listened to and the way he approached life as a young adult. (Post)punk, new-wave, Christiane F, unemployment, squatting, riots, and national actions against the placement of cruise missiles, a Do-It-Yourself mentality, but also De Sneeuwbal (Centrum 111) in Heemstede, Etcetera, Zero, Het Melkwoud, the Patronaat founded in 1984, Club Stalker, the D.A.C, free states, Hal 5, and various other squats where the multitude of Haarlem bands had plenty of opportunities to perform. All without sound limiters.

And so there was also Underground Club Dwiezels in Smedestraat. Ro Krom: When entrepreneur Marc Heule took over De HAK, I moved with the furniture to 'De Dwiezels' (named after the bobtail terrier 'Dwiezel' of Dick Rumpff and Thea Kreuk from De HAK). If Smedestraat 31 wasn't already my second home, it certainly became one now.

At Retro Rewind, you relive the years just before House and Hip hop took over the dance floor. Expect Dwiezel hits like A forest by The Cure, Should I Stay Or Should I Go by The Clash, but also Why Did You Do It by Stretch or Blue Monday by New Order. In short: alternative in the broadest sense of the word. It's all happening at Retro Rewind!

Dwiezel owner Marc Heule (living in Spain since the closure at the end of 1993) will start spinning some tunes from 20:00 together with former house DJ Robert 'Delirious' Brandjes.
