A vinyl listening session dedicated to Golden Earring’s Moontan, featuring the album’s producer.
Wouter Bessels (1977) is a journalist and author who has also been active for 20 years as a producer/mastering engineer for reissues of artists including Golden Earring, Tangerine Dream, Focus/Jan Akkerman, Solution, Kayak, and Het Goede Doel. He also regularly collaborates with English musician/producer Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree fame) on Pink Floyd reissues under the Sony Music banner.
Over the past 10 years, Wouter has focused primarily on Golden Earring's back catalogue, serving as the designated band archivist to produce reissues for the music publisher Red Bullet. For this work, he collaborates closely with Golden Earring bassist Rinus Gerritsen, Golden Earring biographer Jeroen Ras, and his technical sidekick Wout de Kruif.
In addition to releases on compact disc and digital channels, he works closely with Music On Vinyl and Record Industry to translate his optimal-sounding remasters to vinyl. Over recent years, this has yielded an impressive number of releases, with the most recent highlight being the first title for Music On Vinyl's new audiophile vinyl label Artone Signature: Golden Earring's million-seller Moontan, remastered and restored from the original master tapes.
On Saturday morning we'll be listening to this definitive edition of Moontan on a sound system second to none, accompanied by the many stories Wouter can tell the hard work that went into the production of this record. After all, with over 25 years of experience in the music industry, Wouter is always eager to speak at length about music history at home and abroad and teach you something new. Not a bad idea for a Saturday, right?
