Dutch Cassette Culture & Carcassettes

Before vinyl, before streaming, there was tape. Dive into the story of Dutch cassette culture from its 1980s underground origins to the resurgence of Amsterdam's Carcassettes label.

Music journalist Oscar Smit (DJ Oscar) introduces the rise of cassette culture in the Netherlands during the 1980s and explores why the format is making a remarkable return today.

The session then turns to Carcassettes, the distinctive Amsterdam-based cassette label that released 39 titles throughout the 1990s. Now in the middle of a comeback, the label's catalogue has been included in the music collection of the Allard Pierson and is currently the subject of two exhibitions. Co-founder Hans Bos discusses the collective character of the label, joined by musicians Tinca Veerman and Robin Berlijn (tbc) who have released cassettes on the imprint. The label's 40th release is due out later this year, featuring the Klittens and Abel Natürlich.
