De Machine (live)

A vinyl special of the Dutch podcast about the music industry discussing how the vinyl target group transformed from old men to young girls.

If you walked into a random record store in the Netherlands about ten years ago, you would see a lot of beauty. A stunning box set of The Beatles here, a new release from Wilco there. But the truly urgent new pop music for young people, that was hardly seen.

In the past few years, that has completely changed. While on one hand music consumption shifted to fast digital platforms like TikTok and Instagram, at the same time a new generation stepped into the stores. Artists like Taylor Swift, Gracie Abrams, Billie Eilish, and Sabrina Carpenter made sure that young girls embraced vinyl records massively, while K-Pop brought a completely new world into the stores. All pop optimists gather!

Niels Aalberts and Atze de Vrieze take you behind the scenes in De Machine, the weekly podcast of VPRO 3voor12. With guests Dennis van Tetering and Fee Meijer (Universal Music) and Nina van der Velde (Velvet Music).
