From Hip-Hop to Hardcore: DJ Promo’s Defining Tracks

27 May 2025

Join us at PHIL on Sunday and explore the stories behind the tracks that defined Promo's life and 30+ year career, from his early days as a DJ and producer to the 2025 release, Solitude—his first album in seven years.

Following up on recent announcements about Stephen Lipson’s one-off session and the first selection of artists, we continue with exciting news. We’re proud to announce a very special edition of Tracklist of My Life at this year’s Haarlem Vinyl Festival, featuring none other than DJ Promo.

This exclusive listening session takes place in the afternoon of Sunday, September 28, and is accessible to all weekend and Sunday ticket holders. After last year’s memorable session with DJ Chuckie, we're once again diving deep into personal soundtrack with one of the Netherlands’ most influential music figures.

Accessible dark

From early inspirations in hip-hop’s raw energy—think Public Enemy and N.W.A.—to becoming a leading force in the European hardcore movement, Sebastian Hoff (aka DJ Promo) has built a career defined by evolution and uncompromising intensity. Whether you know him from File to Type, his iconic Thunderdome anthems, or his legendary closing set at Sensation Black 2004, this is your chance to hear the records that shaped the man behind the decks. Described as “accessible dark,” Promo’s signature sound—raw bass kicks, industrial grit, and haunting hooks—has left its mark on dance floors from Thunderdome to Defqon.

Despite the decline of gabber in the late ’90s, Promo remained convinced that hardcore was far from over. In the summer of 2000, he launched his own label, The Third Movement, which continues to release cutting-edge work to this day. The label has featured a wide range of artists including Dana, Tommy Pulse, Rude Awakening, D-Passion, Peaky Pounder, and Hysta.

The Bass Kick

Promo’s distinctive sound is widely recognized for the catchy hooks and the iconic bass kick he spent years perfecting—a sound now imitated and sampled by producers around the world. This speaks volumes about his influence and the lasting impact of his work on the global scene.

This one-of-a-kind listening session will trace Promo’s musical journey—from hiphouse to hardcore—and explore the stories behind the tracks that defined his life and 30+ year career, from his early days as a DJ and producer to the 2025 release, Solitude—his first album in seven years.
