From Havana to Haarlem: DJ Jigüe and the Sound of Cuban Vinyl

06 July 2026

Cuban DJ, producer and cultural entrepreneur DJ Jigüe comes to PHIL with Vinyl Master: an immersive listening session that traces the history of Cuban music through rare records, from its golden age to contemporary Afro-Cuban experimentation.

DJ Jigüe is one of the most prominent voices in Cuba's contemporary alternative music scene. As the founder of the label Guámpara Music, a member of the Latin Recording Academy (Latin Grammys), and the creator of Havana RPM (Cuba's first international vinyl festival) he has become a key figure bridging Afro-Cuban musical heritage with the global underground.

Vinyl Master

For the Haarlem Vinyl Festival, Jigüe presents a special adaptation of his internationally acclaimed lecture-performance, Vinyl Master. Using vinyl records and expert curation, he takes the audience on a journey through pivotal moments in Cuban music history. Along the way, he explores how politics, migration, cultural exchange, and underground circulation shaped the island's unique sound.

In this session, DJ Jigüe will also showcase the Havana RPM festival, highlighting how this event has sparked a growing interest and movement surrounding vinyl within modern Cuba, aligning the island with current global trends for the format. Far from a conventional academic lecture, this format functions as an engaging listening session and cultural conversation, where DJ Jigüe acts simultaneously as selector, speaker, historian, and performer.

In Jigüe's session, two vinyl worlds meet across an ocean.
